Deion Sanders and Colorado lose nine players to transfer portal

Colorado has a few quality players head out before next week’s Spring Game

Deion Sanders and Colorado were ready for the re-opening of the transfer portal. However, they had nine players announce their departure since Monday. A break from the two waves of transfers heading to Boulder in the previous two cycles.

Chazz Wallace entered the portal for a second time in a year. The Old Dominion transfer was part of the Buffs initial surge that filled the roster. But Prime’s staff overhauled both sides of the line, which left him searching for his next move as the odd man out. Colorado has six incoming transfers on the defensive line heading into 2024.

Buffs defensive back Jaden Milliner-Jones will also test the waters. The true freshman saw time in all 12 of CU’s games this season. He took steps in his progression, but at the end of the day, will be finding a new home. It’s bittersweet for the 5-foot-11 200-pounder from DeSoto (Texas). He was Coach Prime’s first flip after arriving on campus last January.

Savion Washington will be headed elsewhere soon. The former Kent State transfer followed Sean Lewis, who became CU’s offensive coordinator. Washington was out with injuries which became a factor in week five. By the time he was healthy, the damage was already done with one game left on the schedule.

One of Washington’s linemates who never even played a down at CU will also be looking for a new home. Florida transfer David Conner tore his pectoral during conditioning drills for the Buffs in 2023. At the time, it was a huge loss for Sanders, who raved about Conner’s off-season progression and said he’s working to keep the big man involved with the team through this process.

Another offensive lineman joining Washington and Conner is Isaiah Jatta. The JUCO transfer was put into the rotation for the Buffs last season but didn’t make enough of an impact. The Southern California native might be heading home to play for Lewis at San Diego State.

One of the biggest questions is why Tar’Varish Dawson is leaving Colorado. The young wide receiver stepped up his game when Travis Hunter went down with a lacerated liver and put up great numbers in his absence. He leaves the program with three years of eligibility remaining. Dawson was joined by Jacob Page as other Colorado receiver currently in the portal.

On the other side of the ball, Deeve Harris and Zach Blackwood enter the portal. The defensive reserves didn’t make much noise while in Boulder. Harris, a teammate of Wallace, came as a late transfer from Old Dominion last year. Underwood committed to CU early this year and said goodbye without even suiting up.
