Hershey Bears Captain Dylan McIlrath Announces Retirement, Joins NHL Front Office

Hershey, PA – The Hershey Bears, the AHL affiliate of the Washington Capitals, announced today that team captain Dylan McIlrath has stepped away from his playing career to join the team’s front office. McIlrath, a 31-year-old defenseman, played for the Bears for the past two seasons, serving as captain since the 2020-21 season.

McIlrath leaves a legacy of leadership and toughness on the ice, earning the respect of his teammates and opponents alike. During his time with the Bears, he played in 114 games, recording 14 points and racking up 144 penalty minutes.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have played for the Hershey Bears and to have had the privilege of serving as captain,” McIlrath said in a statement. “However, I feel it’s time for me to take on a new challenge and explore opportunities in front office. I’m excited to stay with the organization and contribute in a different way.”

The Bears organization expressed gratitude for McIlrath’s contributions on and off the ice. “Dylan has been an incredible leader and player for our organization,” said Bears General Manager Chris Heller. “We’re thrilled to have him join our front office and look forward to seeing the impact he’ll make.”

As McIlrath begins his new role with the NHL team, fans will miss his presence on the ice, but are excited to see what he’ll accomplish in his new position.
