Pivetta declines qualifying offer from Red Sox
Nick Pivetta, the right-handed pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, has officially declined the team’s qualifying offer, choosing to test free agency. The decision marks a pivotal moment in Pivetta’s career, as he now has the opportunity to explore offers from other teams that may value his pitching talents. By declining the qualifying offer, which was valued at $20.5 million for the 2024 season, Pivetta signals his belief that he can secure a better contract either with the Red Sox or with another team in the coming months.
The qualifying offer system allows teams to extend a one-year contract to eligible players, usually those who have performed well but are entering free agency. If the player declines and signs with another team, the team that loses the player receives a compensatory draft pick. This system has been a standard practice for MLB teams, particularly for players who may be on the brink of securing a long-term deal or a higher salary.
Pivetta, 31, has had an eventful career with the Red Sox since being acquired in 2020 via trade from the Philadelphia Phillies. He has shown flashes of brilliance but has also struggled with consistency. Over the course of the 2023 season, Pivetta posted a 4.87 ERA with 151 strikeouts in 129.1 innings, but his overall numbers were somewhat mixed. While he provided significant innings and showcased his ability to contribute as both a starter and a reliever, his inability to maintain steady production throughout the season likely factored into his decision to pursue free agency.
This decision could also reflect Pivetta’s confidence in the market and his potential to land a multi-year contract. Given his durability and ability to handle a variety of roles on the mound, Pivetta’s versatility is highly valued by many teams seeking pitching depth. Furthermore, with a strong free-agent market in 2024, Pivetta could find teams willing to offer him a longer-term deal that would provide more financial security than the single-year qualifying offer.
For the Red Sox, Pivetta’s decision leaves them with some uncertainty regarding their pitching depth moving forward. If they are unable to retain Pivetta, they will need to explore other options to fill the void in their rotation or bullpen.
