Auburn Football Chaplain Dies in Drowning on Lake Martin; Investigation Underway

The Auburn University football community is in mourning following the tragic death of team chaplain John “Jack” Williams, who drowned in a boating accident on Lake Martin on December 15, 2024. Authorities have confirmed that Williams, who had served as the Auburn football team’s chaplain for several years, passed away after a drowning incident while spending time on the lake with friends.

Williams, known for his spiritual guidance and emotional support for Auburn athletes, was reportedly with a group enjoying a day on the water when the incident occurred. According to law enforcement reports, Williams entered the water to swim, but at some point, he went under the surface and did not resurface. The group immediately attempted to rescue him, and emergency responders were called to the scene.

Despite the efforts of rescue teams, Williams was later found and pronounced dead at the scene. Law enforcement officials from the Tallapoosa County Sheriff’s Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death. While an official cause of death has not been released, authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. Investigators are continuing to gather information and speak to witnesses who were present at the scene to understand what led to the tragic drowning.

Williams had been a beloved member of the Auburn football program, offering spiritual support and counseling to athletes and staff for years. His role as team chaplain extended beyond just providing religious guidance; he was a mentor, friend, and source of comfort to the players, many of whom have expressed their grief following his death.

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze issued a statement expressing his deep sorrow: “Jack Williams was a beacon of light for so many of our players and staff. His faith, kindness, and love for others were unmatched. His loss is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this incredibly difficult time. Jack will forever be a part of the Auburn football family.”

The Auburn University community has been rocked by the news, and an outpouring of tributes has followed from players, staff, and alumni. Many former and current players took to social media to honor Williams, describing him as a pillar of support and a calming presence during the challenges of college athletics. “He was more than just a chaplain to us,” one player wrote on Twitter. “He was a mentor, a friend, and someone we could always turn to. His loss is devastating, and we’ll miss him deeply.”

Williams had become an integral part of Auburn football, leading team prayers, bible studies, and offering counsel to players facing personal challenges. His passing has left a void within the program, and Auburn is offering support to his family, as well as counseling services for players, coaches, and staff members affected by the tragedy.

As the investigation continues, Auburn University has promised to support Williams’ loved ones and the community members who were closest to him during this difficult time.
