Former Clemson Cornerback Fred Davis Eyes New Destination in Final Year of Eligibility
Fred Davis, a former Clemson Tiger cornerback, has re-entered the NCAA transfer portal, seeking a new college home for his final year of eligibility. This move marks the latest development in Davis’s collegiate journey, which has seen him don the jerseys of multiple institutions.
Davis, a redshirt junior from Jacksonville, Florida, spent the 2024 season at Jacksonville State, where he played under the guidance of head coach Rich Rodriguez. Prior to his stint at Jacksonville State, Davis had brief spells at UCF (2023) and Clemson (2020-2022), where he began his collegiate career.
The 6-foot-1, 192-pound cornerback recently took an official visit to West Virginia, a program that has been revitalized by the return of Rich Rodriguez as its head coach. Davis’s familiarity with Rodriguez’s coaching style and philosophy has undoubtedly played a significant role in his consideration of West Virginia as a potential destination.
“The visit was great,” Davis said in an interview with EerSports. “What stood out was the scenery and how much of a college town it is. The fans are very passionate.” Davis’s enthusiasm for the West Virginia program is palpable, and his comments suggest that he is seriously contemplating the possibility of joining the Mountaineers.
When asked about his expectations under Rich Rodriguez’s tutelage, Davis expressed confidence in the coach’s ability to bring out the best in him. “I know I will be coached hard and cared for here,” Davis said. “I know from personal experience at Jax State what Coach Rich Rod has planned for WVU.” Davis’s experience playing under Rodriguez at Jacksonville State has clearly left a lasting impression, and he is eager to reunite with his former coach.
A former four-star prospect and top-100 national recruit in the 2020 recruiting class, Davis originally signed with Clemson in December 2019 and enrolled the following January. During his three-year tenure at Clemson, Davis accumulated 32 tackles, four pass breakups, and a fumble recovery over 27 career games, including four starts.
After entering the transfer portal in December 2022, Davis played in two games at UCF during the 2023 season before ultimately transferring to Jacksonville State. In his lone season at Jacksonville State, Davis tallied 18 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and four passes defended in 14 games.
As Davis prepares to embark on the final chapter of his collegiate career, he is focused on finding a program that will enable him to maximize his potential and contribute to a winning team. With his wealth of experience and versatility on the field, Davis is poised to make a significant impact at his next destination.
