The Dallas Cowboys have faced scrutiny after hiring Brian Schottenheimer as head coach, a move that has received lukewarm reviews across the league.
When the Cowboys began their coaching search, fans hoped for a high-profile hire, with names like Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn in the mix. However, those prospects quickly faded, and Schottenheimer, previously the team’s offensive coordinator, emerged as the frontrunner. His hiring left many underwhelmed.
While Dallas has since added quality assistant coaches, the team is still being viewed as one of the biggest losers of the coaching cycle. Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report noted that the Cowboys passed on candidates like Eagles OC Kellen Moore, who was familiar with the team’s system, in favor of Schottenheimer—a coach who wasn’t in demand elsewhere.
“Dallas hired a candidate who didn’t draw attention from any other team with a head coaching vacancy,” Moton wrote. “Though Schottenheimer may become a decent lead skipper, the Cowboys could have aimed a little higher to replace McCarthy.”
While Moore wouldn’t have been a flashy hire either, his history with the team might have provided more confidence.
Reports suggest that Schottenheimer’s relationship with quarterback Dak Prescott played a major role in the decision. With Prescott under contract and turning 32 next season, maintaining continuity may have been a key factor in the Cowboys’ choice—though critics argue they settled for less.
