The New York Yankees have made several key acquisitions after losing Juan Soto, but a glaring infield gap remains. To solidify their roster, they could make one more strategic signing.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter, in his Opening Day lineup predictions, projected that the Yankees would land former Colorado Rockies infielder Brendan Rodgers.
“The Yankees have been loosely linked to Brendan Rodgers and Yoán Moncada this offseason, both of whom would provide low-cost upgrades over the uninspiring current mix of DJ LeMahieu, Oswald Peraza, and Oswaldo Cabrera. These players are expected to compete for playing time at whichever infield position Jazz Chisholm Jr. doesn’t occupy,” Reuter noted.
Rodgers, non-tendered by the Rockies, is projected by Spotrac to command a five-year, $56 million contract in free agency. He played only 46 games in 2023 but rebounded in 2024, hitting .267 with 13 home runs. While not a major power hitter, he holds a career .723 OPS.
A Gold Glove winner at second base in 2022, Rodgers could slot in alongside Anthony Volpe, allowing Aaron Boone to shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. to third base. His addition would be an upgrade over LeMahieu, who is currently penciled in as a primary infielder despite recent struggles. Instead of relying heavily on LeMahieu, the Yankees would benefit from securing a more reliable bat to bolster their infield.
