Even at 40, James continues to set records and defy expectations.
The Lakers have quietly been on one of their best runs of the season, winning eight of their last 10 games and playing like a team that’s ready to make a serious push post-trade deadline. The recent addition of Luka Dončić changes the entire team dynamic, but one thing hasn’t changed—LeBron is still playing at an elite level, and as long as he’s doing that, L.A. remains a legit contender.
James just added yet another milestone to his already absurd NBA resume. The league announced that James has been named the Western Conference Player of the Week for games played between Jan. 27 and Feb. 2. Even at 40 years old, he’s still outplaying guys half his age. Over in the Eastern Conference, Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell took home the same honors.
James led the Lakers to a 3-1 record during the stretch, with all four games coming on their annual Grammy road trip. He averaged 27.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 10.0 assists while shooting an efficient 53.8% from the field—a week that included wins over the Hornets and Wizards but was headlined by an undermanned Lakers team taking down the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
That Knicks win was vintage LeBron. With Anthony Davis sidelined (before being shipped to Dallas in the shocking Luka Dončić trade), James put the Lakers on his back. He dropped 33 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and passed for 12 assists on 14-of-26 shooting, reminding everyone why the Garden is still one of his favorite arenas to play in. L.A. walked away with a comfortable 113-105 win, and LeBron walked away with yet another triple-double to add to his ridiculous résumé.
This latest Player of the Week honor is the 69th of LeBron’s career, the most in NBA history. It’s also his eighth since joining the Lakers in 2018 and his first since March 2024. But at this point, it’s hardly surprising.
