The New England Patriots honored former safety and Super Bowl XXXVI champion Matt Stevens after he passed away on March 20 at the age of 51.

In a statement released Thursday, the team expressed their deep sadness over his passing but did not disclose the cause of death.

Stevens played two seasons (2000-01) with the Patriots, helping them secure a victory over the Rams in Super Bowl XXXVI—the franchise’s first championship, marking the beginning of their historic dynasty.

Over an eight-year NFL career, Stevens also played for the Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington, and Houston Texans, recording 13 interceptions in 108 games.

After retiring, Stevens faced a life-altering challenge when he suffered a spinal cord injury in a 2007 motorcycle accident, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite this, he participated in clinical trials that helped him regain some mobility using special leg braces.

Stevens’ resilience and contributions to the Patriots will be remembered as part of his enduring legacy.
