Stephen Crichton Announces Departure from Canterbury Bulldogs: “My Departure Was My Choice”
In a heartfelt statement that has left fans and the rugby league world in shock, Stephen Crichton announced that he will be leaving the Canterbury Bulldogs, revealing that his departure was entirely his own decision. The 24-year-old centre, who joined the Bulldogs in 2023 from the Penrith Panthers, has had a stellar career to date and his decision to part ways with the club after just one season is set to be a major talking point in the NRL.
“I want to make it clear that my departure from the Bulldogs was my choice,” Crichton said in a press conference on Monday. “I’ve had an incredible experience here, and I want to thank the club, the coaches, and most importantly the fans for their support. However, after reflecting on what’s best for my career and my future, I’ve decided that it’s time for me to move on.”
Crichton, known for his explosive pace, tough defence, and try-scoring ability, played an instrumental role in the Bulldogs’ season, despite the club struggling for consistency. His leadership and experience were expected to be a key part of Canterbury’s rebuild under head coach Cameron Ciraldo. But after a year in which he formed an exciting partnership with star fullback Jake Averillo, Crichton’s announcement has left many wondering what prompted the surprising move.
The centre’s decision has sparked speculation about his next destination, with several rival clubs reportedly keen to secure his services. Crichton has already achieved success at Penrith, where he won multiple premierships, and his move to the Bulldogs was seen as a step towards becoming a franchise player in a club on the rise. However, it seems that the player feels his ambitions and future growth may lie elsewhere.
“I’ve had an incredible journey in rugby league so far,” Crichton continued. “But there comes a point in every athlete’s career where you have to think about your long-term goals. I’m grateful for everything the Bulldogs have given me, but it’s time for me to take the next step in my journey.”
Rumours have circulated that Crichton could be heading to a higher-performing club, possibly one with premiership aspirations, but the player remained tight-lipped about where he intends to play next. “I’m focused on finishing the season strong and giving my best to the Bulldogs for the remainder of my time here. As for what comes next, I’ll keep that between me and my management for now.”
Canterbury Bulldogs CEO, Aaron Warburton, expressed his disappointment but also understood Crichton’s decision. “We’re obviously disappointed to see Stephen leave, but we respect his decision. He’s been a valuable player for us this year, and we wish him all the best in the next chapter of his career. He’ll always have a place here at the Bulldogs, and we hope to see him back at Belmore as a visiting player in the future.”
The Bulldogs are now left to navigate the exit of one of their key players as they continue their rebuilding process. While Crichton’s departure is a blow to the club, it also signals an opportunity for younger talent to rise and step into the void left by the experienced centre.
As for Crichton, his announcement marks the end of one chapter in his NRL journey, and the beginning of what promises to be an exciting new phase in his career.
