A Shocking Message to Fans from Terry Francona
Dear Fans,
As I sit down to write this letter, I find myself reflecting on the countless memories and moments we’ve shared over the years. The highs, the lows, the triumphs, and the challenges that come with being part of this great baseball family. But today, I need to share something with all of you—something that might come as a shock, but something I believe is the right decision for me and for the team.
After much thought and deep reflection, I have made the decision to step away from the game that has been my life for so long. This will be my final season managing. I never imagined this day would come so soon, but after everything that’s happened over the last few years—both on and off the field—it feels like the right moment to pass the torch to the next generation of leadership.
This decision wasn’t easy. Baseball has been my passion, my love, and my identity for decades. The relationships I’ve built, the lessons I’ve learned, and the experiences I’ve had as a player and manager have been invaluable. From the players to the front office to the incredible fans, you’ve all been a part of this journey with me. I have felt your support and energy in every stadium, every season. There is no doubt that your unwavering loyalty and passion are what make this sport so special.
I’ve always prided myself on being honest with my players, my staff, and my fans, so I want to be upfront about my decision. The years of managing, the travel, the pressure, the constant demand to keep pushing forward—it all takes its toll. My body has taken a beating, and my mind and heart are telling me it’s time for a change. While I’m not saying this as someone who’s burned out, I am saying this with a deep sense of gratitude and a realization that my energy, my focus, and my love for the game have evolved over time.
I have so much pride in what we’ve accomplished together. From the championships to the incredible seasons, to the battles we’ve fought and the memories we’ve made, I will forever carry those with me. And while we may not have always reached the pinnacle of success, the growth and progress we’ve made as a team and as a community are things I will cherish forever.
But what excites me most is the future. I know the team is in good hands. There are talented players, passionate coaches, and a front office that is fully committed to continuing the work we’ve started. It’s time for a new voice, a fresh perspective to guide this team forward. I have full confidence in the future of this organization and the incredible fans who will always stand by it.
To the fans, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart. You’ve been the lifeblood of this team, and without you, none of this would have been possible. The energy you bring, the cheers, the heartache, the celebrations—it’s all part of what makes this game so beautiful. I will forever be grateful for your unwavering support and for the privilege of managing this team.
So, as I step away, I do so with gratitude, pride, and excitement for what’s to come. Thank you for everything. I’ll never forget the incredible ride we’ve had together.
With all my respect and appreciation, Terry Francona
