ESPN updated its rankings on Sunday, with bowl game results and Playoff First Round games causing movement among teams. The Texas Longhorns are No. 1 in the latest FPI and is the team ESPN’s algorithm gives the highest probability of winning the National Championship, at 27.2%.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish have the next highest probability at 20%, followed by Ohio State at 17.3%, Georgia at 12.9% and Penn State at 12.1%. The only other team ESPN gives a chance to win it all is the Oregon Ducks at 7.7%.
Many Alabama football fans may not care much about which team wins it all. Though, Texas or Georgia winning it all, would be good for the entire SEC.
What probably interests Crimson Tide fans much more is the latest FPI has the Alabama Crimson Tide as the nation’s No. 4 team. Between Texas at No. 1 and Alabama at No. 4 are No. 2 Ohio State and No. 3 Notre Dame. Rounding out the FPI’s top 10 are Georgia at No. 5; Oregon at No. 6; Ole Miss at No. 7; Penn State at No. 8; Tennessee at No. 9 and Indiana at No. 10.
Ranked well below Alabama Football, but advancing to the Quarterfinals of the CFB Playoff are Arizona State at No. 22 and Boise State at No. 24.
Before continuing, a reminder that the three-loss Crimson Tide has no one but itself to blame for not making the Playoff. Even so, Alabama football fans can rightfully point to the new ranking for the 11-3, SMU Mustangs at No. 13. Clemson is ranked two spots lower at No. 15.
Alabama Football, Texas and eight other SEC teams in FPI Top 25.

ESPN is, of course, not intentionally using the FPI to shame the CFP Selection Committee. They don’t have to. Paul Finebaum and Kirk Herbstreit are doing it for them. The rumor that some Selection Committee members have signed up for the Witness Protection Program is not true. Why would they? The committee did its job and selected the 12 most deserving teams. They can’t be faulted that so many of the 12 could not be on any sensible list of college football’s 12-best teams.Alabama Crimson Tide fans enjoying that Josh Heupel’s honeymoon is over in Knoxville
The Tennessee Vols could stand the cold but they could not take the heat from the Ohio State Buckeyes. Many Alabama Crimson Tide fans are loving the result.

Even some Alabama football fans who detest Ohio State found it easy to pull for the Buckeyes against the Crimson Tide’s oldest intense rival. The Crimson Tide and the Vols have played every season but one since 1928. Josh Heupel is 2-2 against the Crimson Tide as Tennessee’s head coach. The losses were bad enough, but worse was all the hoopla that proclaimed Heupel as the latest manifestation of an Offensive Football Wizard.

Saturday night in Columbus, Heupel got his comeuppance. Tennessee fans are aghast and angry, pointing fingers of blame directly at Heupel. As All for Tennessee’s Braulio Perez explained, “Josh Heupel let everyone down in Tennessee’s embarrassing loss.” Braulio added that no excuses can justify the game’s outcome. Heupel’s offensive wizardry produced 16 yards in the game’s first quarter; while Ohio State’s offense produced 205 yards and a 21-0 lead.
Ohio State had a good game plan and Heupel failed to adjust successfully. Whatever changes Heupel made at halftime, the Vols scored no points in the third quarter while Ohio State poured on two more touchdowns. Tennessee fans were streaming out of the stadium before the third quarter ended.
Also writing for All for Tennessee, Colton Pickard reminded Tennessee fans how much progress Heupel has made in Knoxville. Though Pickard did title a story stating the Vols were a “no-show” in Columbus. Pickard is correct and Heupel will not be an SEC ‘hot-seat’ head coach next season. Tennessee has a favorable 2025 schedule and should be the favorite in nine or ten games. Georgia in Knoxville and road games to Tuscaloosa and Gainesville are the big threats, but an SEC schedule that includes Mississippi State, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Vanderbilt should produce easy wins.

Alabama Crimson Tide fans will be primed for Tennessee’s Oct. 18 visit to Bryant-Denny. Alabama football fans are comparing Heupel unfavorably as a Hugh Freeze-like Offensive Guru wanna-be, with more girth. In reality, Heupel uses novel offensive schemes beyond anything in the Freeze playbook. Like all schemes, the Heupel wizardry fails when the opponent owns the trenches. An Alabama Crimson Tide Tradition
Not every Alabama Crimson Tide fan will agree. but for some of us, the photo below is nothing but sweet.
