Breaking News: Bears Stadium to be Relocated as Indiana House Passes Bill to Attract Sports Projects…

Chicago Bears to announce lakefront stadium plans Wednesday

In a strategic move to bolster Indiana’s sports economy, the Indiana House of Representatives is advancing House Bill 1292, which proposes the establishment of the Northwest Indiana Professional Sports Development Commission. Authored by State Rep. Earl Harris Jr. (D-East Chicago), the bill aims to attract professional sports franchises to the region, potentially including teams like the Chicago Bears.

The proposed 19-member commission would be tasked with studying various plans and recommendations to entice professional sports teams to Northwest Indiana. Their responsibilities would include preparing a comprehensive master plan for building the necessary facilities and infrastructure to support such franchises.

Rep. Harris emphasized the economic benefits of this initiative, stating, “Bringing professional sports to Northwest Indiana would not only be a huge benefit for sports fans, it would bring money, business, tourism and endless opportunities for our community.” He also highlighted the potential for inspiring local students by opening doors to careers in sports management, marketing, hospitality, and other related fields.
The bill has garnered bipartisan support, with three Republican co-authors joining Harris in this effort. It recently passed unanimously out of the House Committee on Government and Regulatory Reform and has been recommitted to the House Ways and Means Committee for further consideration.
If successful, this initiative could position Northwest Indiana as a new hub for professional sports, driving significant economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for residents in the region.
