BREAKING: Mike Young Becomes First Coach in Virginia Tech Men’s Basketball History to Lead Team in All Five State Categories

Blacksburg, VA – Virginia Tech men’s basketball is celebrating a historic milestone as head coach Mike Young becomes the first coach in program history to lead the team in all five major state categories: overall wins, winning percentage, conference victories, postseason appearances, and NCAA Tournament wins.

Young, who took over the Hokies program in 2019 after a successful tenure at Wofford, has steadily transformed Virginia Tech into a consistent force in the ACC and on the national stage. Now, after six full seasons in Blacksburg, his impact is being recognized as truly unprecedented.

Under Young’s leadership, the Hokies have:

  • Amassed the most wins over a six-year span in program history, surpassing the mark set during the Seth Greenberg era.
  • Achieved the highest winning percentage among all Virginia Tech head coaches with at least three full seasons.
  • Recorded the most ACC conference victories, establishing themselves as regular contenders in one of the nation’s toughest leagues.
  • Earned five postseason appearances in six years, including four NCAA Tournament bids and one NIT Final Four run.
  • Captured more NCAA Tournament wins than any coach in school history, highlighted by a Sweet 16 run in 2023 and consistent tournament competitiveness.

Young’s balanced, team-first approach has been a cornerstone of Virginia Tech’s rise. Known for his offensive schemes, player development, and authentic leadership style, he’s gained the admiration of players, alumni, and national pundits alike.

“It’s humbling to be in this position,” Young said at a press conference Monday morning. “This is a reflection of the hard work our players, staff, and the entire Hokie community have put in. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished—but I’m even more excited about what’s ahead.”

The 2024–25 season was one of Virginia Tech’s finest under Young. The team posted a 26-9 record, earned a top-4 seed in the NCAA Tournament, and reached the Sweet 16 after defeating ranked opponents in consecutive rounds. The roster, led by veteran point guard Darius Maddox and rising sophomore forward Elijah Taylor, captured the nation’s attention with its gritty defense and efficient, high-tempo offense.

Virginia Tech Athletic Director Whit Babcock praised Young’s consistency and commitment to the program’s core values.

“Coach Young has elevated this program to unprecedented heights,” Babcock said. “He’s a teacher, a motivator, and a true leader. What he’s done here will be remembered for generations, and we’re committed to supporting his continued success.”

As momentum builds in Blacksburg, recruiting has also reached new heights, with Young securing back-to-back top-20 recruiting classes. The program’s culture, built on accountability, unity, and basketball IQ, has become a model for success in the ACC.

With his name now etched across every major statistical coaching category in program history, Mike Young has not only raised the standard—he’s redefined it. The Hokies are no longer chasing history—they’re making it.
