Pettersen led the blue and gold to victory in the biennial contest 12 months ago but her time as the skipper appears to be over after the U.S. finally stopped the rot.

Team Europe were thwarted in their attempts to win the Solheim a record fourth time in a row in Gainesville, Virginia, last week.

Hull was the standout performer for Europe in their three-point defeat.

A notable highlight came when she handed a shellacking to World No.1 Nelly Korda, defeating the American 6&4 in the Sunday singles.

Now she is looking to the future and life beyond Pettersen, whom she described as a ‘brilliant’ captain.

“I don’t know really,” Hull said when asked who should take over.

“I feel like… I honestly feel that Mel Reid would make a great captain.

“When I knew she was going to be one of the assistant captains this time round I was absolutely buzzing. Mel is one of my favourite people on this planet.

“She gets me; I get her. She’s so much fun. She is a good laugh. She can be serious when she needs to be.

“She brings a lot of the atmosphere to the team. I feel like she would be a great captain.”

The feeling appears to be mutual.

During the coverage of the U.S. Women’s Open, Reid told of how much she loves Hull with an hilarious tale about the golfer.

Pettersen insisted she had no regrets about her tenure in the immediate aftermath of defeat at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club.

The Norwegian came under some scrutiny for not picking Leona Maguire more.

Maguire told of how it was ‘a bitter pill to swallow’ that she wasn’t involved in the contest as much as she would have liked.

The Irishwoman got the feeling as though Pettersen thought she didn’t make enough birdies and didn’t hit the ball far enough.
