It’s commendable that the St. Louis Cardinals took care of a pressing club necessity this offseason.

The Cardinals bolstered their major league pitching squad with starting pitchers and bullpen arms.

In 2024, the Cardinals will have a completely redesigned starting rotation.

To strengthen and reorganize their rotation, St. Louis signed right-handers Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn in separate free-agent deals.

The Boston Red Sox traded right-hander Nick Robertson and Rule-5 selection Ryan Fernandez, who was on the Red Sox organizational roster, to address the bullpen.

Several quality pitchers are gone from the 2023 Cardinals team that finished the season with a record of 71-91, which placed them last n the National League Central Division.

Lefty Jordan Montgomery made 21 starts for the Cardinals last year, but he was traded to the Texas Rangers in July. Montgomery is now a highly coveted free-agent.

Right-hander Dakota Hudson made 12 Cardinals starts, and appeared in 18 of their games in the 2023 season. He, too, is a free-agent.

Those departures left huge holes in the Cardinals starting rotation.

Credit the Cardinals front office with striking quickly to repair a very thin starting staff. The Cardinals moved decisively to replace their departed starters.

The starting rotation for the Cardinals is currently composed of seasoned veterans.

Not a single one of their suggested starting is younger than 32.

Age and wear and tear, according to some observers and pundits, could pose a significant threat to the Cardinals rotation in the upcoming campaign.

The starting lineup of the restocked 2024 Cardinals will include a number of former high round selections in Major League Baseball.

The Cardinals will benefit from the years of experience each of their projected starters has had with many clubs.

Gray was a Minnesota Twins pitcher the previous season. As an All Star, he had an impressive 2.79 ERA and 1.14 WHIP while going 8-8. He pitched 184 innings.

In 2011, Gray was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the first round. All told, he was the eighteenth player chosen.

Last season, Mikolas made 35 starts for the Cardinals and pitched 201.1 innings. It was his career’s highest number of starts. In the end, he had a 9–13 record, 4.78 ERA, and 1.31 WHIP. In both 2018 and 2022, he was an All Star.

The San Diego Padres selected Mikolas in the seventh round of the 2009 MLB draft. In 2013, he was traded to the Texas Rangers by the Pittsburgh Pirates, who later traded him to the Pirates.

After being cut loose by the Rangers in 2014, Mikolas signed a free agency contract with the Cardinals in 2017.

Gibson played Major League Baseball for a total of eleven years, in parts. Last season, he pitched for Baltimore and had a 15-9 record. With 192 innings pitched, he recorded a 4.73 ERA and 1.31 WHIP. In 2021, he was an All Star.

Gibson was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 2009 draft. At overall No. 29, he was selected.

Gibson has pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers, and Twins.

Lynn has participated in 12 MLB seasons as a pitcher. He pitched for the Chicago White Sox in the previous season before being sent to the Los Angeles Dodgers. With 32 starts and a 13-11 record at the end, he pitched 183.2 innings.

In both 2012 and 2021, Lynn was an All Star.

The Cardinals selected Lynn in the first round of the 2008 draft. He was selected overall as the 39th player.

The Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Rangers, Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers, and New York Yankees are among the teams Lynn has thrown for.

Lynn is currently back in St. Louis, where he started his major league career back in 2011.

With just 17 starts for the Cardinals in 2023, Matz was the only lefty in the new rotation. After pitching 105 innings, he had a 4–7 record. Matz had a 1.33 WHIP and a 3.86 ERA.

The New York Mets selected Matz in the second round of the 2009 draft. He’ll be starting his tenth major league season.

Matz has pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, the Cardinals, and the Mets.

The St. Louis Cardinals have added several seasoned veterans to their starting staff, which has been bolstered after losing several starters from the rotation from the previous season.

With successful careers in the rearview mirror, Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn will be relied upon to help the Cardinals reclaim the National League Central.

This old scout believes that there is considerable risk associated with Gibson and Lynn’s highly strained arms, but that the returns may outweigh the risks assumed by the Cardinals front office.

The team should be commended for its swift decision to replace a worn-out starting lineup.
