The goalkeeper has been without a club since his contract with Manchester United terminated at the end of last season. Last season, De Gea’s form fell, and Erik ten Hag wanted to shift the team dynamic by bringing in Andre Onana as a result.

De Gea has been unable to find a new club, but he is highly recognized to Premier League clubs due to his prior success in Manchester. Newcastle have been without Nick Pope for some weeks due to injury, and their form has suffered as a result. Shearer believes their backline needs to be strengthened and has identified the Spanish goalie as a potential signing.
