The San Francisco 49ers will play the Los Angeles Rams in Week 18 to finish the season after clinching the No. 1 seed in the NFC last weekend with a win over the Washington Commanders and a loss by the Philadelphia Eagles to the Arizona Cardinals.

With the No. 1 seed secured, the 49ers must make a decision in Week 18 whether to go about their business normally or rest important players for the stretch run.

Earlier this week, wide receiver Deebo Samuel intimated that San Francisco’s starters would play “a good bit” to keep the momentum flowing, but that rest was also important for the body.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan has already ruled out quarterback Brock Purdy, saving him for the team’s postseason run, in which the 49ers might face a slew of opponents in the divisional round depending on how Week 18 goes.

In our most recent audio episode, we addressed the 49ers’ victory over the Commanders, as well as what San Francisco should do in Week 18 and prospective playoff opponents.

Meanwhile, if the Rams defeat the 49ers in Week 18, they will be guaranteed the No. 6 seed and will meet the Detroit Lions in the wildcard round.

The Green Bay Packers face a win-and-in against the Chicago Bears this weekend, which would guarantee them a playoff spot, whether as the No. 6 or 7 seed.

If all of the presumptive favorites win in the wildcard round, the 49ers and Eagles will meet in a divisional matchup at Levi’s Stadium.

Personnelly, it appears like the Eagles match up best with the 49ers among prospective playoff teams, but they’ve been sliding down heading into Week 18, and San Francisco destroyed their earlier game this season.

If the Rams or Packers defeat their opponents, they will face either team at Levi’s Stadium because they are the lowest seed still alive.

The 49ers have had the Rams’ number in the past, but they will face a Los Angeles squad that is as hot as any other heading into the playoffs, led by Matthew Stafford, perhaps the finest quarterback in the NFC.

Meanwhile, the Packers have gotten hot in the second half, thanks to young, rising quarterback Jordan Love and one of the NFL’s top teams.
