Michigan’s punishing running attack and swarming defense led to a 34-13 victory over Washington in the College Football Playoff final on Monday night at NRG Stadium in Houston.

The game was hyped as a showdown between Michegan’s renowned defense, which is ranked first in the country, and Washington’s Heisman Trophy contender Michael Penix Jr.

The Wolverines hounded Penix all night and forced two turnovers, while Michigan running backs Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards each carried for 134 yards and scored two scores.

“Over 100 Michigan men are on this team tonight, in uniform,” Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh said on the trophy presentation stage. “What they’ve accomplished in the last 372 days is incredible.” We’re champions, merely national champions.”

The victory followed a controversial 15-0 season in which Michigan was suspected of planning a major sign-stealing operation, which resulted in Harbaugh’s brief suspension late in the season.
