The Michigan Wolverines won the national title on Monday night, defeating the Washington Huskies 34-13.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer declared Wolverine Day in Michigan following Michigan football’s victory in the 2024 College Football Playoff National Championship.

“I am proud to proclaim Wolverine Day in Michigan as a mom of two Wolverines and as governor,” Whitmer stated. “The exceptional skill, determination, grit, and professionalism displayed by this team exemplify the values that define us as Michiganders.” They went undefeated the whole season, becoming the only collegiate football program in history to do so. I believe University of Michigan students, alumni, and Michiganders all around the world agree with me: nobody has it better than us?! Nobody! “Let’s go Blue!”

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II, a University of Michigan alumni, issued a statement in support of Wolverine Day in Michigan.

Rep. Debbie Dingell also issued a statement thanking the Wolverines.

“This Wolverines team has fought hard for every single win that brought them to the National Championship tonight, and they deserve all the success they have earned,” Dingell said. “They have remained focused in the face of adversity, challenges, and distractions, and, most importantly, they have stuck together and never stopped working as a team.” I know this squad, I adore them, I see how they look out for one another, and I am so proud of how they represent our state. Congratulations, and Hail to the Victors!”

This is Michigan’s first national championship since 1997.

Next, fans will see whether coach Jim Harbaugh remains with the team or departs as NFL franchises do.
