Waqa Blake, a center for the Fijian national team, has officially signed a one-year contract with ST HELENS.

After Will Hopoate left, the Merseyside club held the number 3 shirt empty. The 6’3 flyer has now taken over that position.

Blake has played with the Parramatta Eels for the past four and a half seasons. He was a vital part of the team that made it to the 2022 Grand Final.

Additionally, he has made five appearances for Fiji, scoring three goals in the most recent Pacific Championships (2023).

The 29-year-old commented, “I’m hoping I can fit in and we can win another one,” on his move to Saints. “To come to a club like St Helens where they’ve always been in the top four or top two, and then such a big thing winning four-in-a-row (Super League titles),” he remarked. I can’t wait to come to work after seeing all of the players and strike that they have there.

Before moving forward, Blake had a conversation with former Saint Kevin Naiqama”I believe that the Super League is improving.” Nobody would have predicted that St Helens would defeat Penrith in the World Club Challenge the previous year. The England team that faced Tonga demonstrated the improving standard of football.

“I saw the Grand Final where Kevin Naiqama won Man of the Match, and I played with him at Saints, where he was really good. I’m excited because he told me a lot about Super League while we were at the Fiji camp, how unique it is there, and that the Saints are a terrific group of guys.

“We have been on the lookout for some time now and we had other bits around the salary cap that we needed to sort; in retaining our own players which is always important,” says head coach Paul Wellens, who is thrilled to have signed Blake.

However, this has also been our top priority, and we are thrilled to have Waqa join the team as a player of his caliber.
