The signing of Amelia Huakau (Née Mafi) to a two-year contract has been confirmed by the Wests Tigers NRLW.

Huakau, a former player for the Parramatta Eels NRLW, is eager to start a new chapter in his career with the Tigers after leading the Eels to victory in all nine games during the previous campaign and getting married lately.

Her rugby league career started in South Auckland and she moved to Sydney in 2018 before making her NRLW debut in 2020. She signed with the Eels after initially participating for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership.

In addition, she is a Tongan international. She recently participated in the 2023 Pacific Championships versus Australia and New Zealand after making her debut as a representative in 2022.

After being given a tour of the Wests Tigers Zurich Centre, she remarked, “I’m just speechless to be honest, this place is just amazing,” according to the club’s website.

“Compared to previous clubs I have played for, everything is far more modern and professional.

Everyone has been quite friendly, and I know a number of the girls from my time with the Roosters, like Sarah [Togatuki] and Bo [Vette-Welsh].

She went on, “I love the front-foot attacking style that last year’s team had, and I look forward to developing my game under Brett [Kimmorley] and alongside some of the best forwards in the women’s game.”

The NRLW team’s head coach, Brett Kimmorley, expressed his admiration for her signing and thinks she would significantly strengthen the front pack at the Tigers.

Kimmorley stated, “She was very good in what was a difficult campaign at her former club last season.”

“I am confident that Amelia will continue to improve as a player, and I am excited to watch her play over the course of the next few seasons with us.

“We are delighted to have Amelia and her family join Wests Tigers.”
