Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network said on January 27 that Sean Desai, the former defensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles, is being interviewed by the Bills for the position of defensive coordinator. Eric Washington, the Bills’ associate head coach and defensive line coach, left the team to take a new position with the Chicago Bears just hours before word of Desai’s interview leaked.

Following Leslie Frazier’s departure from the position last season, head coach Sean McDermott functioned as defensive coordinator; nevertheless, the staff shuffle and Desai’s interview may indicate a potential opportunity for 2024.

“Interesting” Action by the Bills
Desai has a wealth of experience as a defensive coordinator, having served as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 and the Chicago Bears in 2021. Later on in the season, he worked in the same capacity with the Philadelphia Eagles, but he was let go.

Just one season after the Eagles won the Super Bowl, Desai found it difficult to create a defensive presence in Philadelphia, as Mike Chiari of Bleacher Report pointed out.

With an average of 252.7 passing yards per game, teams effortlessly moved the ball against the Eagles through the air, according to Chiari. “Although most of the late-season unrest happened after Desai was replaced, that is a major reason why they lost five of their final six games to finish 11-6 and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Divisional Round of the playoffs.”

The Eagles benched Desai in favor of Matt Patricia, but the defense did not get any better as the team continued to lose games in the late season. Following the decision, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni stated that it was a challenging one that put both coaches in a challenging situation.

Sirianni stated, via SI.com, “I know I put Matt in a tough spot and I know I put Sean in a tough spot, but at the time that I did that, I thought it was the best decision for the football team.”

Desai would be a “intriguing” acquisition for the Bills, according to Chiari, following a strong defensive campaign under McDermott.

The Bills would be a fascinating place to living place for Desai because Leslie Frazier’s departure from coaching left them without a defensive coordinator this season,” Chiari wrote. “Even with multiple defensive injuries, head coach Sean McDermott called the defensive plays, and Buffalo finished fourth in scoring defense and ninth in total defense.”
