According to MLive, Jesse Minter, the defensive coordinator for the Michigan Wolverines, is anticipated to leave this week to join Jim Harbaugh in the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to people with knowledge of the situation, the move is anticipated to take place by the end of the week, making Minter the second staff member from Michigan known to accompany Harbaugh to the NFL. According to reports from over the weekend, Minter was informing the Michigan players of his impending departure.

He has not officially recognized the change, nor have the Chargers, the school, or the relocation. On Thursday, at an inaugural press conference in Los Angeles, Harbaugh is scheduled to speak to the media.

Going forward, Minter will be replaced by Michigan’s recently promoted head coach Sherrone Moore, who could potentially take over all three coordinator positions if Jay Harbaugh decides to follow his father to the west.

At Moore’s inaugural news conference on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Jay Harbaugh was there. Minter wasn’t.

Minter oversaw two top-10 defenses during his two seasons at Michigan, which enabled the Wolverines to win back-to-back Big Ten championships as well as a national championship in the College Football Playoffs. In 2023, the team led the country in both total defense (247 yards) and scoring defense (10.4 points per game).

Mike Macdonald, a former defensive end for Michigan who is expected to take over as the next head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, was given credit for revamping the Wolverines’ defensive scheme in 2021. Minter replaced him. Minter, 40, has been a collegiate coach for a long time. He gained his NFL experience as a member of the Baltimore Ravens coaching staff from 2017 to 2020.

The Chargers also took away Michigan’s million-dollar strength coach this week. In a news release on Monday, the school announced the elevation of assistant strength coach Justin Tress and acknowledged the departure of Ben Herbert.
