following the Miami Hurricanes’ Pinstripe Bowl defeat to the Wisconsin Badgers in December 2019, head football coach Mark Richt made the decision to step down from the position. Manny Diaz, the defensive coordinator, had already accepted the position of head coach at Temple, but former Miami AD Blake James made the decision to buy Diaz out of his contract and appoint him as the head football coach of the ‘Canes.

Since the 2016 campaign, Diaz has served as the defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes. Prior to joining the Owls as head coach, he spent more than two weeks leading the team in Philadelphia after taking Geoff Collins’ place.

What if Blake James had taken a true risk and had hired Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin instead of bringing Diaz back to Miami?

The History of Kiffin
We won’t go into too much background information here because Lane Kiffin’s story has already been told so effectively. Before becoming an assistant coach for the Bulldogs, Lane Kiffin played quarterback for Fresno State. His father, the renowned defensive coordinator Lane Kiffin, was also an assistant coach.

At USC, Kiffin developed into a highly esteemed “offensive mind” under Pete Carroll. The Trojans competed for a third championship in a thrilling loss against the Texas Longhorns while attending USC, where they won two BCS National Championships. Under Kiffin’s leadership, USC finished 23-3. In 2007, the Davis family selected Kiffin to lead the Oakland Raiders.

Kiffin failed miserably with the Raiders before taking over as the head coach with the Tennessee Volunteers for one season. Kiffin’s reputation was tarnished after he ran from UT to USC in the middle of the night after only one season- a 7-6 season at that.
