Devin Booker led the Phoenix Suns to a 117-103 victory over the Utah Jazz, while Deandre Ayton added 14 points. In a losing effort, Lauri Markkanen scored the most points out of anyone.

Despite only shooting 25% from long range and 66.7% from the charity stripe, Utah managed to maintain a close lead for the majority of the game. Though the squad was shorthanded going into the game, they were unable to overcome missing 29 three-pointers and nine free throws on the evening.

Despite a valiant attempt, the Suns easily defeated the Jazz, winning 34–22 in the last frame. What did Utah’s fourth consecutive loss teach us?

Let’s dissect it.

Insufficient Depth Bringing Back Its Ugly Head
Due to their inability to suit up, Simone Fontecchio, Jordan Clarkson, and Collin Sexton were unable to overcome the depth concerns. When Walker Kessler and Ochai Agbaji were replaced by Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones at 3:41 in the third quarter, the Jazz really had a four-point advantage.

Over the following five minutes, the Suns went on a 17-3 run that put the game out of reach. In the interview that followed the game, Hardy spoke to the second unit.

“I didn’t feel like that group overly gave up the rim or let them shoot wide-open threes,” Hardy stated. “We need to determine our offensive strategy with that group in order to attempt to produce some easier baskets.”

Utah Still Hasn’t Added the Towel However, the main event of the evening was Markkanen’s comeback. The front office in Utah could have easily sat their All-Star and played for a draft pick, but that wasn’t the case.

Despite missing the previous two games due to a wrist injury, Markkanen managed to play 36 minutes. Having said that, it might not be relevant to try to intentionally lose the final seven games of the season.

Regardless of whether Markkanen plays or not, the Jazz seem to be stabilizing at No. 9 in terms of lottery odds based on the current pattern.
