Josh Allen, quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, is a finalist for NFL MVP for the third time in his career, however he has lost out this time. At Thursday’s NFL Honors, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson was formally named the 2023 season’s MVP. Jackson defeated Allen, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, and Niners running back Christian McCaffrey in a five-way race.

He led the NFL in total yards (4,830) and total touchdowns (44) in the 2023 regular season. After completing 385 of 579 passes for 4,306 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions, he wrapped up the regular season. But Allen’s running stats—111 carries for 524 yards and a career-high 15 touchdowns—helped propel the Bills. Allen’s effect on the ground along with Buffalo’s late-season push is what propelled him into the MVP conversation.

In a victory over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 15, he also made league history as the first player to record four straight seasons with 40 total touchdowns. In addition to 148 carries for 821 yards and five more touchdowns, he finished with a career-best 3,678 passing yards for 24 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Bills were hoping to seal their trip to Baltimore for the AFC Championship, but they were once again defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in heartbreaking way. Allen and company will have to wait until the following regular season.
