The Miami basketball team faces North Carolina on Saturday, and after suffering yet another humiliating loss against Virginia on Monday night, the game is all but necessary. Miami comes into the match ranked 70th in the NCAA NetRatings on Saturday. To make it to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in a row, the Hurricanes have a lot of work ahead of them.

The Miami basketball program reached numerous pointless benchmarks after the team’s 60-38 defeat at Virginia. In an ACC game, it was the fewest points Miami had ever scored. The two prior offensive failures against Virginia also happened to be fruitless. The Miami basketball team’s lowest point total since 1948 was thirty-eight.

Miami is now playing three straight games against teams in the top quadrant. Miami visits Clemson on Wednesday, following their trip to North Carolina on Saturday. Last month, Miami defeated Clemson in the Watsco Center. Miami has a chance to reclaim a spot in the NCAA Tournament when they play North Carolina and Duke later this month.

North Carolina is placed 11th in the Net Ratings going into the matchup on Saturday. According to the ESPN Basketball Power Index, the Tar Heels have a 63.6 percent chance of defeating the Hurricanes. According to the BPI, Clemson has a 77.4% chance of defeating Miami. If Miami wants to salvage this season, it must begin to pull upsets.

Miami has not given itself much room for error. This season’s third defeat by more than 20 points came at the hands of Virginia. A defeat to Louisville, the ACC’s bottom team, is added to that. After the best-ever season for the program, this year has been a major disappointment thus far.

Miami plays Georgia Tech and Boston College twice in addition to the aforementioned matchups. Miami must prevail in each of the three matches. Miami’s hopes of earning an at-large spot in the NCAA Tournament will almost disappear if they lose to teams lower in the standings. It is imperative that the Miami basketball team wins against North Carolina this coming Saturday.
