We defeated Charlton Athletic 1-0 on Saturday night to secure our spot in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup quarterfinal, and Robert Vilahamn was happy with the impact of his replacements. The game’s lone goal was scored by Kit Graham, who came on as a substitute in the second half. Her low-driven shot from the edge of the box found the back of the net to give her former club the win at Brisbane Road. But before the goal, it appeared to be one of those nights in front of goal, with Eveliina Summanen and Bethany England hitting the woodwork twice and several other opportunities glancing past the post. Robert showered the players with adulation as they came off the field.

“I talk a lot about the performances, and we didn’t play well in the first half,” he said in an interview with SPURSPLAY following the game.

“However, on certain nights, particularly in the cup, you need a strong team so that guys can enter and win the match, so I’m glad we’re in the quarterfinals now.

Kit scored a fantastic goal, but I also think Jess [Naz] and Martha [Thomas] gave us a lot of structure, and Matilda added good energy and set pieces. All five of them performed admirably when they came on, and you need that kind of squad because substitutes need to make an impact, and they did.

“It’s a good day because we won the game, kept a clean sheet, and scored a nice goal.”

We had played two games this week, one at home against Manchester City and one away against Liverpool. It was our third game in seven days. The manager talked about his players’ efforts throughout a difficult week and the significance of finding ways to win.

“You want to win every game, and we haven’t been able to do that this week,” Robert continued. “But, we finished with a win and received some much-needed time off before getting ready for Aston Villa next week.”

“They have played three games in the span of seven days, and throughout they have cooperated, fought, and attempted to accomplish the goals we discussed. The fact that the guys managed to win this game makes me very delighted.
