It was initially believed that the New York Giants would not be able to select any of the top-ranked quarterback prospects in this year’s draft. Although just three quarterbacks were projected to be selected in the top 10, it appears that the NFL has decided that a fourth signal-caller is deserving of that ranking as well.

J.J. McCarthy, the quarterback for Michigan, was formerly thought to be a late first-round or early second-round talent in this selection. McCarthy, according to recent rumors, is rising through the draft boards and may ultimately be chosen in the top ten.

McCarthy is reportedly selected significantly higher in this year’s selection than the media had predicted. This offseason, McCarthy was predicted to be selected on day two in many early mock selections and prospect projections. McCarthy seems to be a potential top-10 pick now, though.

NFL Insider for Sports from A to Z McCarthy is the QB2 for an NFC team in this draft class, according to a firsthand source who recently spoke with Destin Adams. This report comes amid other sources that speculate that McCarthy might be selected early on in the first round.

McCarthy’s early draft forecast was also shared by Dane Brugler of The Athletic:

“I don’t believe he’ll place higher than 15.”

In a conversation with ESPN’s Matt Miller, an NFL Scout compared McCarthy to one of the top quarterbacks in the league:

The scout informed Miller that J.J. McCarthy “would be Joe Burrow if he were on a team that threw the ball.”

McCarthy appeared to be a second-round choice for the Giants at the start of this offseason. Right now, that prospect looks more like an impossible. McCarthy will probably need to be selected by the G-Men with the No. 6 pick in the draft if they want him. Still, this would be considered the most contentious draft choice.

McCarthy may be taken by the Giants at No. 6?
The Giants are “at the very least, on the table” selecting a quarterback in the first round, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan. Nevertheless, choosing the signal-caller general manager Joe Schoen wants with the No. 6 choice in the draft will not be simple. In the draft order, the Giants are ranked ahead of at least three clubs that are in need of a quarterback: at least three quarterbacks are predicted to go in the top 10.

The three quarterbacks selected by consensus to be the best in the draft are LSU’s Jayden Daniels, USC’s Caleb Williams, and UNC’s Drake Maye. But McCarthy is inching his way into some teams’ top three spots, which may make him a viable option for the No. 6 pick in the draft.

McCarthy threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns this season with just four interceptions, leading Michigan to a National Championship. Despite only being needed to throw the ball on 332 occasions, McCarthy showed himself to be a competent passer this season. Despite his lackluster stat sheet, scouts appear to adore his tape.
