A quarterback is going to be needed by the Denver Broncos.

It’s very obvious by now that Russell Wilson and the Broncos are going to part ways. Wilson is still favoured to land with the Pittsburgh Steelers at DraftKings Sportsbook (-110).

NFC Divisional Playoffs - Tampa Bay Buccaneers v Detroit Lions

Baker Mayfield is one of the potential answers to Denver’s never-ending quarterback circus. Of course, there’s a big catch: Mayfield is eligible for NFL free agency. Mayfield will probably remain in Tampa because he recently helped the Bucs make the NFL playoffs.

In the event that Mayfield decides to go unsigned and the market opens up, Sean Payton and the Broncos need to show interest.

Undoubtedly, Mayfield’s 2023 NFL season was his greatest. His career-high yardage

Why it makes sense

Denver, as mentioned at the top, needs a quarterback. And Mayfield might be the one to take over for a few seasons in order to get them to the postseason.

In addition, he would work well with Payton’s offence. Mayfield isn’t hesitant to attack the middle of the pitch in particular.

The 49ers’ need for another last second miracle deserves a deep rewind

Mayfield would have a stronger offensive line in Denver to shield him and buy him some time, considering he was sacked forty times during his previous campaign with the Bucs.

Mayfield also benefits from Payton’s guidance and teaching. Mayfield would have the opportunity to work with the greatest offensive coordinator and head coach of his career in Payton.

It would be entertaining to witness when you consider the degree of competition that both Payton and Mayfield possess. Based on that degree of motivation, they would bring out the best in one another on practice fields, in the locker room, and on game days.

Why it does not make sense

Although Mayfield’s addition would put a stop to the Broncos quarterback carousel, the issue remains unresolved.

Throwing up his mouth in disgust, Mayfield would rank third among quarterbacks in the AFC West, behind the Kansas City Chiefs, who have won two Super Bowls in a row. Not even the other elite teams in the AFC with elite quarterbacks are included in that.

And that’s assuming Mayfield—which is unlikely—even reaches free agency. After all, Mayfield and the Bucs recently participated in the playoffs and won the NFC South.

Mayfield may not even draw interest from the Broncos in the event that he becomes a free agent. Ultimately, it will cost them a lot of budget space to let go of Wilson, and Mayfield will demand a large salary if he does.

Final thoughts

This offseason, Payton, George Paton, and Denver will have to address the quarterback problem. Wilson is accepting bids on his Cherry Hills estate and has officially announced that he is leaving the Broncos.

I don’t see Mayfield reaching free agency, even though he might succeed in Payton’s system and under his guidance.

The next quarterback selected in the NFL Draft or another free agency will be the quarterback for the Broncos.
