One of the more intriguing stories of the NFL season is already developing around quarterback Baker Mayfield of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and his upcoming free agency. When asked prior of Super Bowl 58 which player he believes to be “unfairly hated,” Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton may have increased the drama a bit. That’s when the Broncos instructor abruptly mentioned Mayfield’s name.
“I have no doubt that Baker [Mayfield] was one of them, but what happened all of a sudden? When the script turns, we are all like, “We really do love Baker now.” Are we not, like, I’m trying to find out where Baker is, since he’s a free agent, you know?
It is reasonable to conclude at this time that the Denver Broncos’ gamble on Russell Wilson was a monumental failure. The Broncos believed that Wilson had enough left in him to seriously contend for Super Bowls in the future, so they traded Wilson to the Seattle Seahawks in 2022 and then inked him to a hefty five-year contract deal worth 242.5 million. That doesn’t seem to be the case, as the Denver Broncos have only managed 13 victories in their first two seasons under Wilson, and they haven’t made the playoffs.
Wilson’s lack of progress with the Broncos means the team needs a quarterback. That is, unless the Broncos finally choose to stick with Wilson or give Jarrett Stidham a chance. The Broncos have a window of opportunity to solve their quarterback problems during the summer. Although it’s unknown how serious Payton and the Broncos are about acquiring Mayfield, the former first-round pick has undoubtedly improved his reputation as an NFL starter following his one-year stint with the Bucs.
