While it would be simple to claim that the Patriots entirely reorganized their offensive coaching staff, one contentious figure will be making a comeback to New England in 2024.

Simply said, it’s unclear what part he will play.

Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo met with reporters Wednesday, as the team introduced offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, defensive coordinator DeMarcus Covington and special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer. It was during Mayo’s session that he was asked whether or not former wide receivers coach Troy Brown would return to the staff.

“Troy Brown is still on the staff,” Mayo confirmed, per team-provided transcript. “… I would say the staff is still pretty fluid, but he is on the staff.”

The past few seasons have not gone well for Brown, as the three-time Super Bowl champion’s popularity in New England began to decline as his receiving group performed poorly while he was coaching them.

The Patriots have filled his prior position with replacements. In 2024, Tiquan Underwood and Tyler Hughes will share leadership of the wideouts. Brown’s responsibilities going forward probably involve him continuing to coach the returners, though there will likely be no formal announcement from the organization until they find him a title.

Brown did not wear any Patriots paraphernalia during the week and was conspicuously excluded from any team-uploaded footage, despite the fact that he officially represented New England at the Senior Bowl in early February. As the offensive coordinator for the American Team, he spent time scouting several players who would be of interest to Eliot Wolf, the personnel man at Mayo.

Though it’s unclear if Brown’s interactions with those prospects will affect the Patriots’ intentions, he will be staying in New England.
