Having participated in numerous derby matches in recent years, Callum McGregor is aware of the significance of these events. And in the most recent meeting, the Celtic captain led his club to a 2-1 victory over Rangers at Paradise with a masterclass in midfield play.

Brendan Rodgers is hurting right now no matter what he says – but the Celtic boss needs to find the answers fast.

That’s the view of former Hoops defender Jackie McNamara who reckons opposing Premiership teams have the champions sussed. Celtic beat Motherwell at the weekend to ease the pressure on Rodgers but made heavy weather of it, needing goals deep into stoppage time from Adam Idah and Luis Palma to seal a dramatic comeback win.

It happened one week after the squad lost to Kilmarnock, and Rodgers, whose team is two points behind Rangers in the title race, still has a lot of work to do to calm down anxious bettors. Following that draw against Killie at home, supporters let him know how they felt, and Jackie Mac believes he took the taunting remarks from the terraces seriously, despite his outward declarations that everything is fine.

McNamara also reckons opposition sides have Rodgers’ predictable setup figured out – and challenged the boss to mix it up to reignite their title challenge. He told the BBC: “Brendan will be hurting after certain comments last week. The fans weren’t happy after the (Kilmarnock) game. They haven’t been convincing, no matter how you dress it up. He’s had injuries to deal with but so have a lot of other teams.

“There is no denying that they haven’t been the same team. It’s a distinct setup; everything they do is much more possession-based. Teams now need to figure out how to fall behind more quickly because they are aware of this.

“Maybe only the personnel changes during the games, but the system doesn’t seem to change much that much. However, they must act considerably more quickly in order to cause issues for teams.
