In 2024, Mike Zimmer will take over as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.
Although I disagree with many of Jerry Jones’ actions, I think this hire hasn’t received nearly enough attention.
Zimmer has been involved in football for a long time; in the early 2000s, he even called defensive plays for Dallas.
Mike Zimmer is a coach first, despite the irony of the statement.
He differs from Dan Quinn in that Quinn has a reputation for wanting to be your buddy before everything else.
Despite being a competent coach in his own right, he was more concerned with being your friend than your mentor. Zimmer is going to fix that.
Around 10 days ago, Mike Zimmer talked about that exact thing.
“The ones that wanna be great, they wanna be coached,” Zimmer said.
Although I thought it was a good idea to have Dan Quinn return, Dallas, like the offense, struggled against above-average football teams last season.
Fresh Start Micah Parsons discussed his delight about playing for a coach who is as straightforward as Zimmer during an appearance on the Stephen A. Smith Show.
Zimmer is not in your corner. The legendary Cowboys player Darren Woodson even forewarned players that Zimmer might initially irritate them.
This is the type of change this team needs. Someone who is going to hold these players accountable.
Not just praise them when they do well against lesser opponents.
I love Micah Parsons as a Dallas Cowboy, but man I wish he would stop talking so much!
He is on track to be one of the greatest defenders of all time, and he cares more about being in the media than anything it seems right now.
Although Zimmer has spent much of his career coaching a 4-3 defense, he has demonstrated adaptability as Bill Parcells’ defensive coordinator when he used a 3-4 scheme.
Dallas has more skill than any of the teams Zimmer coached while he was the head coach of the Vikings, and he has demonstrated over the years that his defense is effective.
Throughout Zimmer’s first six seasons with the Vikings, the defense finished in the top 12 in points allowed, including a top-five showing in 2015, ’17, and ’19.
