Sean Payton and George Paton detail what they want in the Denver Broncos' next QB - DNVR SportsAlthough Sean Payton hasn’t given any solid information about Russell Wilson’s tenure in Denver, he did imply that the Broncos will be moving on from him when he said that they can’t afford to lose out on “the next one” at quarterback.

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado: Although Sean Payton hasn’t given any solid information about Russell Wilson’s tenure in Denver, he did imply that the Broncos will be moving on from him when he said that they can’t afford to lose out on “the next one” at quarterback.  Payton met with the media at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday and said the club should know by the end of next week what direction they’ll take at QB.

When asked if he supported the notion of a quarterback solution, which has eluded general managers and coaches since Peyton Manning’s retirement eight years ago, Payton responded, “Yeah, we better.” It’s essential in this league since our division is so competitive, Payton then relayed a funny meme that caught his attention recently.

”There’s a Broncos fan with a shirt on with like eight quarterbacks’ names crossed through them and he’s drinking the quarterback ‘Kool-Aid,”’ Payton said. “Our job is to make sure this next one doesn’t have a line through it.”

The next one.

That sounds as though Wilson’s time in Denver might be over, something that’s seemed imminent since he was benched for Jarrett Stidham the last two weeks of the season.

The Broncos have been examining the quarterback class in free agency and this week at the combine, they will visit with college throwing possibilities.

After being traded from Seattle to the Broncos two years ago, Wilson has only won 11 of his 30 starts. Wilson stated over the weekend that he intends to return to Denver in 2024.

In the next five years, Wilson said he still wants to win two Super Bowls.

“I wish to return to Denver.” I’m hoping I get to return. To be honest with you, I would really want to return. On Sunday night, during the live broadcast of “I Am Athlete,” a podcast hosted by former NFL receiver Brandon Marshall, Wilson added, “I have incredible teammates.”

Wilson also repeated his contention that the Broncos threatened to bench him at midseason if he didn’t adjust an injury guarantee in his contract, something the team has called a mischaracterization.

After signing a contract worth about $245 million a year earlier, Wilson chose not to waive the injury guarantee. He went on to start seven more games before being benched by Payton for the last two games.

Wilson said to Marshall, “I didn’t want to set a precedent for players to remove their injury guarantees.” “It was not something I was going to do.”

When pressed about Wilson’s renewed threat of being benched if he didn’t change his contract, general manager George Paton backed down on Tuesday. Payton said he hadn’t seen Wilson’s appearance on the show.
