the defensive coordinator and head coach of the Dallas Cowboys will not be present at the NFL Scouting Combine this year. Todd Archer of ESPN, who covers the Dallas Cowboys, reported that Mike McCarthy and Mike Zimmer will remain inside The Star as they assemble the remaining members of the team’s personnel and deliberate on tactics and plans.
McCarthy claimed that it made more sense for them to stay at The Star due to the workload capacity and time efficiency, McCarthy stated, “Zim and I will spend an entire week together here and cover a lot of ground with things we’re working on.”Both McCarthy and Zimmer will still interview prospects remotely via video calls as well as review tape of player workouts during the combine.
“At the same time, we can continue to take part in the combine process and maintain direct communication with our coaches in-person through meetings and video calls.”
This will be the second consecutive year McCarthy has opted to not attended the combine. Last year, McCarthy chose to stay back in Dallas during the combine while he strategized the new offensive scheme and prepared to take over play-calling duties. He did make the trip later during the week of the combine to meet with media, but soon returned back Dallas to continue scheme preparation.
The two seasons that McCarthy has opted to skip the combine, the Cowboys have gone 12-5, placing first in 2022 and fourth in 2022 in terms of points scored. McCarthy’s process is still the same this year, but it appears like he is building a defense strategy this time.
Regarding contracts, the Dallas Cowboys have a ton of goals to complete on their summer schedule. The team’s ideal scenario would be to come to an agreement with LB Micah Parsons, WR CeeDee Lamb, and QB Dak Prescott. In addition to guaranteeing longer years in Dallas for its All-Pro players, accepting to extensions with these players would provide more immediate cap relief in 2024. The team has a number of pending free agents in addition to hoping to extend the contracts of its key players. Tyron Smith, their longtime outstanding left tackle, is set to enter free agency. When asked about Smith’s future during the NFL Combine, Cowboys Executive Vice President Stephen Jones stated that the team intends to meet with him shortly and hopes to retain him in Dallas through the 2024 season.
