Pierce appeared to have a knee injury during Game 1 of the 2008 NBA Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers in Boston. He was taken back to the locker room.

But in an unexpected turn of events, Pierce made a comeback a few minutes later, helping the Celtics win Game 1 and eventually win the series.

Pierce talked about the long-running rumours about the incident in a podcast, specifically the theory that he used the wheelchair as a justification to go to the loo.

“You think it would have only taken two minutes if I had to use the lavatory or shit on myself? The game only let on for like a minute or two.” stated Pierce.

A more realistic idea was offered by the Celtics icon, who hinted that he might not have been as badly hurt as first thought. Pierce made hints about energising the team with a dramatic return to the game.
