The Cleveland Browns may face some opposition if they hope to re-sign Joe Flacco for the upcoming campaign.

After a productive tenure with the Browns, Flacco is scheduled to become a free agent. After signing with the Browns on November 20, Flacco made four starts during the regular season and went 4-1. He completed 1,616 yards of passing with 13 touchdowns. The fact that Flacco, who turned 39 recently, demonstrated he still has it in him has other clubs paying attention.

Among the teams expected to show interest in Flacco are the New England Patriots, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Former Browns offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt is now in the same position with the Patriots and has a relationship with Flacco.

According to reports, the Patriots are considering signing Flacco as a bridge starter in order to assist in developing a rookie quarterback—such as Drake Maye of North Carolina—should they choose to select one at the third overall pick, according to Cabot on February 29.

“Alex Van Pelt, the former offensive coordinator for the Browns who is currently in that position in New England, is leading the charge in the hunt for a quarterback and is well aware that Flacco, who turned 39 on January 16, still has a lot left in him.”

The Patriots are targeting a potential franchise quarterback with their third-round selection, as Cabot reported. The rookie contract of Mac Jones, the No. 15 overall pick in 2021, is still in effect for one year. He is probably not going to start for New England.

Deshaun Watson will return to the Browns next season, but Flacco’s return as the team’s number two on the depth chart would still be welcome. Last season, Cleveland discovered the importance of having an experienced backup on hand.
