Aston Villa lost around £120 million in their most recent fiscal year, and they may have to let go of at least one important star this summer.

The Champions League-chasing team reported losses of £119.6 million for the fiscal year that concluded on May 30, 2023. This year’s June 30 accounting period is anticipated to conclude.

According to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR), clubs are only allowed to lose a maximum of £105 million over a three-year period. Losses exceeding this amount may result in points sanctions.

Midfielders Douglas Luiz and Jacob Ramsey are expected to be targets for rival teams this summer, as Mail Sport revealed on March 1. Since Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, John McGinn, and other important attackers have signed new contracts since the beginning of 2023, Villa is unlikely to consider offers for either Leon Bailey or Ollie Watkins.

Villa made a total of £40 million via the sale of homegrown players Cameron Archer, Aaron Ramsey (Jacob’s younger brother), and Jaden Philogene last summer. This amount can be deposited as pure profit in accordance with PSR regulations.

Boss is keen to improve this squad at the end of the campaign, especially with a possible campaign ahead, but is likely to have to make compromises in the transfer market.

Villa’s wage bill has also increased significantly since Steven Gerrard replaced Dean Smith in autumn 2021, with another boost under Emery. Top earners like Lucas Digne are among those who may also move on this summer.

Villa’s statement read: ‘It is important to note that these figures are in line with the strategic business plan, and we continue to operate within the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

‘The owners of Aston Villa remain committed to the long-term and sustainable development of the Club, and we look forward to continued progress on the delivery of our strategic plan.’
