Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys, has praised Trey Lance in particular ahead of a competition for the backup quarterback position in Texas.Jerry Jones on 49ers fans at AT&T Stadium: 'I guarantee you this will be a Cowboys crowd'

Before the 2018 season began, the Cowboys signed Lance because the 49ers had demoted their former third-round pick to the position of third-string quarterback.

In order to move up to the third slot and acquire their man, the Niners orchestrated a blockbuster trade to acquire Lance in the 2021 draft. Miami was given first-round picks in 2021, 2022, and 2023 in addition to a 2022 third-rounder.

Lance, who made just 17 starts in his college career, backed up Jimmy Garoppolo in his first NFL season and made two starts before being handed the starter job in 2022. He suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, which marked the end of his playing time in San Francisco.

Lance didn’t see a single snap in Dallas in 2023 as he sat behind Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush in the pecking order, but Jones now believes the 23-year-old is ready to compete for the backup role.

Jones informed reporters, “The arrow’s really up.” “As a character, a worker, and a person, he has surpassed expectations. He has special abilities. He’s just what we had wanted and planned for.

“We were aware that we would be paying the bonus immediately upon awarding the pick. That was included in the same choice. His history with the team and his personality—possibly as a player—have supported that.

Jones mentioned Lance’s dearth of playing time but maintained that the standout player from North Dakota State is making an impression during drills.

“From our experience in games, we don’t know any more about the field than we did when we brought him on, and that is his knowledge.

“What we do know, though, is what he’s done in practice. We don’t know about his game experience, we don’t know his competitive experience, but we do know about his practice experience, and the things he’s done there, it’s been all plus.”

Dallas are expected to agree a new long-term extension with Prescott this offseason, while Rush and Lance are both in the final years of their current deals with the team.
