On Friday, March 15, the Cowboys cut the 28-year-old receiver before he was promised $4 million. The Cowboys save $9.5 million by making this move. Dallas had given Gallup permission to look for a trade before he was released.

Gallup was taken by the Cowboys in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft, and he had been a member of the team for the whole six years prior to his departure. Gallup made an immediate impression as a vital member of the offensive line, starting eight games in his debut campaign.

He quickly established himself as a key member of the offense, finishing his second season of 2019 with 1,107 yards on 66 receptions and six touchdowns. After Amari Cooper, he finished second on the team in every significant receiving category.

Despite CeeDee Lamb’s arrival, Gallup had another strong season in 2020, recording 59 receptions for 843 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

During the 2022 offseason, his performance finally led to a five-year, $62.5 million contract extension. The action was taken soon after the Cowboys traded Cooper to the Cleveland Browns and after Gallup sustained an ACL tear at the end of the regular season.
