Tyler Matzek’s recent triumphant comeback from Tommy John surgery on his left elbow is yet another illustration of the incredible tenacity he has displayed during an incredibly amazing journey.

After being selected by the Rockies in the first round of the 2009 MLB Draft, Matzek was a highly-touted prospect. His journey to the Majors wasn’t without incident; shortly after moving to Colorado in 2014, he had the yips and battled mental and physical health issues for years.

In 2019, the left-handed pitcher was throwing for the Texas AirHogs of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball in front of hundreds of fans. After two years, he rocked a packed Truist Park with what could have been the greatest postseason performance.

However, Matzek has never had it easy. He was put to the test once more right as it appeared that he had finally ascended the mountain. After a season marred by injuries in 2022, he underwent Tommy John surgery in October. Thus, the fan favorite could only watch from the sidelines in ’23 as the Braves had one of their greatest seasons ever.

After going through all of these ups and downs, Matzek was even more appreciative as he pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in Saturday’s 12–4 victory over the Phillies.
