Owen Moxon picked a perfect moment to create a goal that could decide the championship.

Since the Derby was never a match that the home team had to win, there doesn’t seem to be much doubt that John Mousinho’s team will earn the necessary points to secure a Championship return.

Nonetheless, having occupied top spot for almost six-and-a-half months, the Blues have their sights on further glory, namely the League One title.

In an engrossing televised clash pitching first versus second, the Rams were within 13 minutes of reducing the deficit to two points in their relentless pursuit.

Then arrived Moxon, dropped to the bench to accommodate the impressive Lee Evans, but making a pivotal impact upon his eventual introduction.

Trailing 2-1, he accepted Sean Raggett’s pass, cleverly wriggled around James Collins, before unleashing a tremendous 25-yarder into the far corner of the net.

In his eleventh game since moving to Fratton Park from Carlisle in January, it was a spectacular leveller, and Bolton was also applauding.

Pompey had to come back from behind twice, and as we all know, this promotion push has demanded this kind of mental toughness.

Joe Ward’s first goal was first erased by Abu Kamara’s deft footwork, but the Derby man restored their lead just before halftime, giving them the advantage.

Pompey persevered as always, drawing inspiration from Kusini Yengi and Tino Anjorin, but it was Moxon, the 59th-minute replacement, who made the difference.
