Duke forward Mark Mitchell has confirmed to 247Sports that he would use the transfer portal, meaning another well-known player will be searching for a new place to call home.

Mitchell exclaimed, “I’m excited.” “I wanted something new, even though I loved my time at Duke.”

The 6-foot-8 Kansas City sophomore, a McDonald’s All-American and a five-star prospect, has started 67 of 68 games in his career. In 27.1 minutes per game as a rookie, Mitchell averaged 9.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game while improving his overall scoring, rebounding, and shooting percentages, while only making 27.5% of his three-pointers.

Even though his assist totals don’t immediately jump off the page, Mitchell can be a good finisher near the basket, has versatility on the defensive end, and can occasionally create opportunities for teammates.

At first, Mitchell—who was ranked 13th in the class of 2022—selected Duke over UCLA and Missouri, the two finalists. At his next destination, he will be eligible for another two years.

Mitchell is expected to rank among the most sought-after frontcourt players in this spring’s transfer portal cycle now that he has formally entered the portal.

Anytime during that window, a player can submit paperwork to their current school to request a transfer and within 48-hours of receiving the paperwork, a player must be submitted into the NCAA Portal database.

Before the window opens on March 18th and after the window closes on May 1st, players who have earned enough credits to graduate are able to enter the portal at any time, listed as a “Grad Transfer”.

Simultaneously, with any coaching movement – whether a head coach is fired or gets another job – players of that team are also given a 30-day window in which they can enter the portal which is not bound to the March 18th-May 1st window.

Other schools are allowed to get in touch with the player and start the recruitment process once the player has formally registered on the portal.

This off-season, a new regulation was also implemented that will significantly impact the transfer market.

Players were allowed a one-time transfer waiver in the past, and the NCAA required a waiver to be issued in order for them to become immediately eligible again if they transferred again.
