The 384-person audience was made up more of away supporters than home ones because Truro was using Gloucester City’s artificial field for their remaining “home” games. And Torquay’s race to avoid relegation to the Southern League was greatly aided by the three points, which came ahead of a trip to Bath City on Saturday.

“I am relieved, really happy, and really proud of the players,” said interim manager Downes. “We were superb in that first half. We had the better of the conditions in the first half, but they had the better of the conditions in the second half.

“We looked pretty comfortable, dominating territory, possession, and opportunities, and I believed we were fair value for the two-nil at halftime. We had to prepare for their attack in the second half, and we succeeded in doing so. Although I’m devastated that we didn’t maintain a perfect record, at this time in the season, results are everything, and three points away from home is crucial.

Despite an early setback caused by striker Duane Ofori-Acheampong receiving an early yellow card, a second talking to from the referee, and a heel injury, Torquay was the better team throughout the afternoon. In the 19th minute, Downes made the decision to substitute him with Ethon Archer. However, Archer played a fantastic game and won the title of Visitors’ Player of the Match at Meadow Park, most likely thanks to an impartial committee.
