The best years of Callum McGregor’s Celtic career are ahead of him.

When the legendary player does decide to hang up his boots, Steven Caldwell believes the Hoops have a ready-made replacement for him at captain. McGregor, 30, has made over 450 appearances for his boyhood club and has an incredible five Trebles to his name, making him one of the most decorated Parkhead players in history. The vital midfield player, who still has plenty of energy left before considering retirement, is Brendan Rodgers’ team’s mainstay.

But by the time CalMac takes up his boots, if Alistair Johnston is still at Parkhead, Caldwell thinks the Canadian would be a perfect substitute. As the 25-year-old’s assistant to interim Canada manager Mauro Biello, former Scotland great Caldwell is well-versed in the player’s abilities. Additionally, Caldwell believes the right-back has the leadership skills necessary to eventually assume the position of captain.

“Alistair has improved a lot, and you’ll only get better playing games at the level he’s playing at right now,” he said to the Scottish Sun. His comprehension is evident when he plays on the right side. He plays right back or on the right side of defense for us. In terms of moving forward and occupying various positional areas throughout games, he has added elements to his game.
