In a game against the San Jose Sharks on Monday night, captain of the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid recorded his 100th assist of the year, making him just the fourth player in NHL history to achieve the 100-assist plateau in a single season.

With five minutes remaining in the second frame, McDavid scored his 54th goal of the year by passing the puck to Zach Hyman in a two-on-one situation. The Oilers lead 9-1 at the end of the second period.

In the history of the NHL, only three players have tallied 100 assists: Mario Lemieux in 1988–89, Bobby Orr in 1970–71, and Wayne Gretzky, who accomplished the feat 11 times in his 20-year career. When Gretzky accomplished it with the Los Angeles Kings in 1990–91, it was the last time a player reached the milestone.

McDavid, who scored a goal earlier in the evening, is currently third in the NHL in scoring with 32 goals and 100 assists. Currently in his tenth NHL season, McDavid has amassed 982 points in 644 career games (335 goals and 647 assists).

With two assists against the Sharks, his colleague Leon Draisaitl now has 106 points for the season, 41 goals, and 63 assists. Along with his 54th goal,
