Detroit’s downtown is like the quiet before the storm. With his maroon jacket, white dress shirt, khaki pants and brown loafers, Lions quarterback Jared Goff seems more like a Fortune 500 CEO than a starting NFL quarterback.
Goff recently gave some of the Lions’ biggest supporters the same Breitling watches that he gave the offensive linemen on the squad throughout the season as a surprise thanks to a relationship with Jared Jewellers. Goff transformed the historic venue into his makeshift office for media representatives, and for the afternoon, cameras have taken the place of smoke in the cigar bar where we are sitting.
For all the mutual love between Detroit and Goff, the former No. 1 pick still faces an uncertain future with the Lions. Goff is heading into the final season of his current deal, and the quarterback offers a five-word philosophy when the discussion turns to his future. Could a long-term contract get ironed out before the season starts?
