Rooney’s time with Birmingham turned out to be contentious. In October 2023, he took over as manager from John Eustace, when the team was sixth in the rankings. However, he won just two of his 15 games, and in January, he was fired when the squad entered a losing relegation battle.

After stints with Birmingham and Derby County, as well as a stint in Major League Soccer with D.C. United, this is his third position in English football.

Rooney has managed 152 games in his career, with 41 victories and 73 losses under his belt.
